To increase staff awareness and understanding of epilepsy and its management, including treatment options and the administration of rescue medicines during prolonged or repeated seizure

 

On completion of the course the learner should

  • Be Able to explain what epilepsy is
  • Have working knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the brain
  • Be aware of their role when it comes to diagnosis of Epilepsy
  • Able to explain what Seizures are-
  • Understand the difference and implications of triggers and warnings (Auras)
  • Understand how Epilepsy is classified, and the class related to management
  • Be able to explain what is meant by SUDEP
  • Be able to explain what Status epilepticus is
  • Be aware of the various management options for Epilepsy
  • Know what actions to take when a patient has a seizure
  • Understand the difference between Antiepileptic medicines and rescue medicines
  • Aware of procedure for administering rescue medications, such as Buccal Midazolam, Rectal Diazepam, and Paraldehyde and olive oil enema
